Ways to Save Money on Landscaping

Get the most savings in your landscape project by landscaping professionally.

We all want to be wise with our finances in ALL aspects of our lives, but how can we achieve that with our landscape improvement projects? Here are a few ways how.

Money-Saving Landscaping Tips

Plan Your Landscape Wisely

Consult a company that can do both the design AND installation. That way, you are only working with one company. They will help you come up with a Master Plan OR a “Plan of Attack” if it doesn’t require a plan of the property. They will show you how to approach the project rather than stumbling through a haphazard job, one that may need to be redone or reworked later.

This will inevitably make your renovation project more cost-effective since you won’t be doing double the work or fixing something that was completed incorrectly. They will also help you take everything into consideration, like what plants you want, what outdoor living features you might like, favorite materials, and desired accessories.

Low-Maintenance Dwarf Plants

Low-maintenance plants always seem to be “trending” because people just don’t have the time to prune and shape their plants. They are also always coming out with new and improved varieties, whether it is native or non-native. So, if you need a plant at a certain size, you are most likely to find it. Just make sure you don’t buy one that you “like” without reading its information. Just because it’s “cute” now doesn’t mean it isn’t going to grow 40 feet! Also make sure that the plant works in your zone 100% of the time. Some nurseries will sell a plant but it won’t be able to handle our extreme heat or extreme cold. Best thing to do is get a Landscape Designer that knows all of these things for you!

Long Lasting Hardscapes

There are so many materials out there that are built to last. Pavers and flagstone are just a couple. If they are installed on a crushed stone base, it is less expensive AND you won’t have to worry about the mortar coming out of the joints in years to come. Composite decking has come a long way and you can get a great product that will last you well into the years where you will care. Solid brass landscape lighting fixtures with a lifetime warranty may be a little expensive at the time of purchase, but they will last you 10-20 years! All of these things can be discussed with a Landscape Designer that has the installation knowledge, as well as the book knowledge.

Preventative Maintenance

Proper pruning, mulch, and pre-emergent weed control are three key preventative measures that will help you save money in the long run. Mulch helps soil retain water, keeping plants hydrated. Putting down a pre-emergent weed control BEFORE weeds sprout will save you time and money on removing them and dealing with them later. As far as pruning, a lot of expensive damage can be done when plants are pruned wrong or at the wrong times of year. Have an expert help or guide you in taking care of your landscape once it is renovated. Don’t leave it in the hands of someone who doesn’t know plants.
