How to Prepare Your Landscape for Spring During February

If you’d like your outdoor landscape to be prepared for spring, then here are the tasks you’ll want to complete this month.

We’re in the middle of February, and it can be a little dull at times. The winter holidays are behind us now, but the weather has still not warmed up just yet. That said, though, spring is almost here, and you want to get ready ahead of time so that you can enjoy the spring season when it arrives. Part of spring preparation involves getting your landscape ready for the occasion. If you’d like your outdoor landscape to be prepared for spring, then here are the tasks you’ll want to complete this month.

Maintenance & Cleaning

While a little cleanup before spring doesn’t sound very thrilling, it’s a productive way to spend your time, even in February. By getting this cleaning done early, you avoid having to get it done when the more enjoyable spring weather comes around.

In addition to cleaning, you should also look at your different landscaping tools and make sure they are ready for use when spring starts. A little maintenance on your landscaping tools helps them last longer and perform their tasks more effectively.

Pruning

Some people might have the thought that winter isn’t the best season to get pruning done, but it’s still a useful task to get done at this time. Just be careful about which bushes and shrubs receive pruning. For example, it’s fine to prune shrubs that bloom during summer, but you should leave spring-blooming shrubs alone.

If you have any raspberry canes or fruit trees to prune, February is also the perfect month to get them pruned as well. If there are any other questions about pruning that you want to have answered, your local landscaping company should be able to provide some insight. Try to pick a local company as they will be more familiar with the plants that grow in your area.

Mulching

February brings weather that is good enough to get mulching done. Add mulch along your shrubs, trees, and other areas around your landscape. This gives your yard much-appreciated nutrients, and it helps your greenery retain moisture and stay insulated. A perk with mulching specifically in February is that, when it’s still winter, the smell of mulch isn’t quite as strong.
