Ways to Turn Your Yard into an Oasis This Summer

It has been SO hot in Maryland recently, and the humidity has hit an all-time high. Why not use this time to turn your yard into an Oasis so you can enjoy it and keep cool? Here are a few ways to do that AND increase the value of your home at the same time.

Consider a Water Feature

Whether it is a fountain from Patuxent nursery OR from Costco, you can add a splash of interest (Pun intended!). It can add both pool water AND beautiful sound to your home and landscape. You can also keep it low maintenance by not adding any fish and adding just a tablespoon of bleach to keep the algae down. If you want something more extensive, have the Landscape Design Center build you a waterfall or raised fountain.

Plant a Shade Tree or Install Pergola

Trees are a wonderful addition to a landscape that can shade you while you are outside AND cut the cost of energy that your house uses. From the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center, they say depending upon the amount of shade, trees can reduce household energy consumption by between 5% and 15%! So if your bill is $200/month, you could save around $30 per month, which would be $360 per year! Sounds good to me.

If you don’t want to care for a tree OR don’t really have the space for it, maybe consider a pergola. It can be both shade and a place to string those beautiful bistro lights you’ve been dying to put up. Pergolas come in ALL kinds of materials, such as Metal, Vinyl, Cedar, Stain Wood, etc. Contact the Landscape Design Center to see how you could incorporate one in your landscape.

Consider a Pool

Even though we do not install pools, we can certainly help you design one AND install the pool decking around it for you. The Landscape Design Center can install pavers or travertine around it and the possibilities are endless! You can consider a raised Pool Spa or an inground pool. You can make it a simple wading pool OR you can install a diving pool. There are SO many options; allow The Landscape Design Center to go over all of them and pick which one is right for your needs.
