Improving Landscape Water Drainage

Improving Landscape Water Drainage

Here are a few ways you can improve upon your landscape drainage as we get into summer.

We’ve had plenty of April showers this year, and we’re going to experience more rain as the year goes on. You don’t want water to overpower your yard. There have to be means of getting the water away from your property. This is when it’s necessary to have effective landscape drainage. Here are a few ways you can improve upon your landscape drainage as we get into summer.

Allow Your Landscape Drainage Routes to Run Freely

Make sure that your drainage paths are never obstructed. Some yards have drainage paths that get blocked by planters and raised gardens. Getting rid of these obstacles allows you to redirect water more efficiently. You want your yard to have a slight slope that gets water away from your lawn. If you block the route that water would take to leave your lawn, your lawn will become flooded.

If Natural Drainage Systems Aren’t Working, Install Artificial Ones

For those who have poor landscape design or soils like clay that don’t drain well, waterlogging is still going to be an issue even after your runoff takes water away from your yard. To remedy this, artificial drainage systems are a popular solution. There are various drainage systems that people will use in these situations, including simple ditches, french ditches, and piped drainage.

Think About Using an Inlet Basin or a Channel Drain

An inlet basic helps control the rate at which water is absorbed into your lawn. Water that would otherwise accumulate more rapidly on your lawn and flood your yard would now be released into your yard more gradually so that your lawn doesn’t suffer as heavy a toll. These can be installed just underneath your landscape, so they aren’t obstructive. Try installing them in places that are known to take on heavy amounts of water.

Harvest Water Where You Can

A water barrel or storage well can help you harvest water that would otherwise overwhelm your yard. You can use this gathered water to nourish your lawn later. This is a realistic option for people who don’t have good drainage systems in place to redirect water at lower points around your landscape. It can also be useful for people who want to have water on hand to prepare for the dry season.
